How these prices are built
From the filed rate manualEvery California auto insurer files its rate manual with the Department of Insurance. We rebuild each insurer's price step by step from that filing — base rates, territory by ZIP, vehicle symbols, driver class, discounts and its own rounding rules. The formulas and tables run on our server only.
Checked against the state surveyThe California Department of Insurance, 2026 Auto Premium Survey publishes prices for fixed driver profiles in 270 neighborhoods. Survey-matched means our rebuilt price for this exact profile, in a rating area identical to your ZIP's, came within $1 of the published price.
Where the filing leaves a choiceSome inputs are not spelled out in a filing — a new model's vehicle symbol, which spouse drives which car. Where we had to choose, we chose from the survey and say so under "How we priced it". Where our rebuild is further from the survey, the price is still shown with a tag and the count of survey neighborhoods it matched.

How to read these prices
Estimates, not offersThese are filed-rate estimates for the survey's profile. The insurer's quote can differ with your exact car, driving history, discounts, fees and underwriting.
Missing is not "not sold"If an insurer is missing, we could not price this profile or ZIP from its filing yet, or it does not write this profile in the survey. Check the insurer directly.
Not a rankingSorted by price or name only. Coverage is the survey's: the same limits for every insurer, except where a tag says otherwise. Some insurers require membership.
